Cabo Raso Surf Sessions Set to Gather 28 Pro Surfers in Big Wave Contest

With a holding period starting last Saturday (January 15th), Cabo Raso Surf Sessions 2022 is taking place in Cabo Raso, a big wave surf spot located in the southwest end of the Estoril Coast, just a few kilometers away from Guincho Beach, Portugal.

The event, prometed by local legend and 4x time national champ Ruben Gonzalez, is set to gather 28 pro surfers in a total of 4 free surf sessions, with those putting together the most outstanding performances being awarded with several prizes summing up to a total prize money of 6.000€.

Tiago Pires, Nic Von Rupp, Vasco Ribeiro, Kiron Jabour, Pedro Scooby and Lucas Chianca “Chumbo” are among the invitees to this special event, meant to take place on the 4 best surfing days of the season (the holding period ends on March 30th). Portuguese surfers Camila Cardoso, Kika Veselko, Joana Andrade and Mafalda Lopes will be competing in the female category.

Since the main goal is to showcase the quality and versatility of Cabo Raso, half of the event (2 sessions) is taking place in big waves (> 3.5m) while the othet half is taking place in high performance conditions (1.5m-3m offshore). For the next couple of months, the organization will be monitoring the surf forescast in order to pinpoint the best days to call the event ON, which will happen with a 48-hour notice for each surf session.

“While Cabo Raso is mostly known for big waves, this event will show that it can also offer epic conditions with medium sized swells", Ruben Gonzalez, who has produced a web-documentary about Cabo Raso back in 2013, states. “It's time for surfers and surf audiences to acknowledge this magical spot in Cascais, which in terms of tourism can even rival with iconic places such as Boca do Inferno”, he says, referring to one of the most soughtafter sites in the area.

All 4 surf sessions will be filmed and posted on social media (YouTube, Instagram and Facebook) under the general designation Onda do Cabo Raso (links below). A trio of experts (including two official judges from the Portuguese Surfing Federation and a former competitor with extensive experience in big wave surfing) will be watching live and scoring all performances in 5 different categories: best tow-in performance, best female performance, best high performance, best paddle-in performance and best maneuver.
