Volume is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a surfboard.
Your body weight, fitness, skill level, as well as the type of waves you want to surf or surf regularly will determine how much or how little volume you need.
The guidelines below will help you to calculate the right volume of a day-to-day surfboard with some variants according to the factors listed above.
Note that larger waves and/or more moving water require more volume, along with the use of wetsuits, among other factors. Smaller, weaker waves also require a little more volume than what it's used on a board for everyday conditions.
We could say that boards with higher volume float more and paddle more easily – although the bottom of the board is also an important factor for paddling – thus being more suitable for less skilled or less regular surfers.
Beginners: 50% up to 80% or 100% of your weight in volume. Note that this can vary a lot depending on age, physical shape, motivation, use of a wetsuit, etc. - talk to us.
Intermediate and less regular surfers: 40% to 50% of your weight in volume.
Experienced surfers in good shape: 38% to 40% of your weight in volume.
Advanced surfers in top shape: 34% to 38% of your weight in volume.
Note that this formula doesn't always apply. As indicated above, volume calculation varies according to wave conditions, age, physical shape, personal taste and surf frequency.
